May Birchbox!
Another month, another Birchbox! Yay!
The first thing I noticed on this one is that the box was black. They’re usually a bright fun pink so black let me know that it was something special.
And when I opened it up I saw that it was a Gossip Girl themed box. I freaking love Gossip Girl, so that was exciting. To be honest, the items themselves weren’t exactly “Gossip Girl-y” and the theme went as far as the packing, but it was still fun. Here are the May goodies that came in my box.
Dr. Jart+ BB Cream. BB cream is moisturizer, primer and sunblock all in one. Some even contain foundation. I just learned about BB cream last week when my mom told me about it, so this was great to receive this month. And I love all travel-sized face lotions since I always need them in my toiletries bag.
BeautyBlender Blender Cleanser, a makeup brush and sponge cleaner
Arquiste L’Etroge perfume sample. The full 55ml size bottle goes for $165 so this is an expensive little sample!
Color Club in Disco Nap — This is my 3rd polish from Color Club, I got an awesome blue/turquoise color in a previous box and my mom gave me a bright orange one that she received in her box. So far I really like this brand, it’s really bright and heavily pigmented. This gold is already on my little fingers!
twistband Head Band. My girlfriends have all received the hair ties in their boxes and have raved about how fabulous they are. I was excited when I got this headband so I could test it out. I wore it right away and took it to the most challenging environment — hot vinyasa yoga class. And this headband was amazing. Through all my down dogs, rag dolls, and chaturangas this thing didn’t.move.an.inch. Impressive.
Fun stationary with the Gossip Girl XOXO saying on it.
That’s my box for this month! Did you get any of the same things I did? Was yours totally different? Oh, and I totally signed my husband up for Birchbox Man! We should be receiving one of those in a few weeks also, so I’ll do a breakdown on that. I’m interested to see what the fellas get!
iPhone Photo Round Up
At the Pitt Street Mall in Sydney watching the street artists
Here’s another installment of my iPhone Photo Round Up! I read a quote the other day that said “The best camera is the one you have with you” and that is so true. A big camera isn’t practical for every day use and there are just some moments where it’s easier to use your phone than a big DSLR.
Here are some pictures of Sydney and some more of us being back in Austin. And yes, I have jumped on the Instagram bandwagon as well. I love that it is a place to store all your pics in one spot and it posts to Twitter immediately. If you’re on Instagram my name is AFCAmanda so please find and follow me there!

Loving our time in Australia and enjoying Mother Nature
When you travel overseas with a group of people for 3 weeks and are together every.single.day. it is easy to get annoyed with each other. Throughout our trip I took a lot of pictures of people sleeping with their tongues hanging out of their mouths and drool dripping down their chin, but I thought I should save those pictures and instead put up the ones of us having fun.
Our Australia trip was 90% work, but here’s what we did with our 10% of play time. We painted walls, rode railways, and swung from vines in the forest like little monkeys. There really is not enough outdoorsy stuff in my life (probably because I’m more Jimmy Choo than John Deere) but every time I get to enjoy nature and breathe fresh non-city-polluted air, my spirits are lifted.
Thank you, Australia, for letting us enjoy your natural beauty.
Beautiful Buildings in Melbourne, Australia
On our Australia trip this time we were able to explore more than just seeing Sydney. We went to Melbourne! Melbourne is a much smaller city than Sydney and is similar to Sydney being like NYC and Melbourne being like Chicago.
The one downside is that we went to Melbourne over Easter weekend and just about everything was completely shut down. Seriously, all of Australia closes down for Easter. Not just Easter day, but the whole weekend including Easter Monday… Because Easter Monday is a holiday now?
We were able to explore a little bit of the city and my favorite part were all the buildings. The architecture there was so pretty and unexpected. Melbourne was a friendly city and next time we go I would love to be able to see more and have places be open.

Sticky Toffee Pudding
Holy yum yum.
Sometimes really good things happen when you have a British husband. First, you get to hear that sexy British accent every day. Secondly, you get a free pass to go to Europe as much as you like without violating any visa laws. And thirdly, you learn about different customs, traditions and food.
Oh the food.
For some reason the British have a reputation for having ‘bad food.’ I’m not exactly sure where or how that started because between fresh fish ‘n chips, amazing soups and roast, and bread cups instead of rolls, they definitely have amazing food. And amazing desserts.
These little cupcake clouds are called Sticky Toffee Puddings. What makes them a thick and creamy cupcake is that they’re made with dates that you blend into your batter. Since dates are a natural sweetener it also cuts down on the amount of white sugar in the recipe.
Top this all off with an insane maple gaze that makes it all sticky and you have a little piece of British heaven.
Sticky Toffee Pudding with Maple Toffee Glaze
Adapted from Martha Stewart’s Cupcakes
Yields 14 cupcakes
Cupcake Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup Brandy
- 8 oz. plump, moist dates (preferably Medjool), halved and pitted
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. coarse salt
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
Cupcake Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350. Grease standard sized muffin tins, set aside.
- Bring the water, brandy, and dates to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and cook until dates are very soft, about 5 minutes. Transfer mixture to a food processor and puree until smooth. Let cool 15 minutes.
- In a medium-sized bowl, Whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside.
- With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream butter and brown sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low.
- Add flour mixture to sugar/butter/egg mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of date puree, and beating until just combined after each.
- Divide batter evenly among prepared cups.
- Bake, rotating tins halfway through until a cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean, 23-25 minutes.
- (Toward the end of baking time, make the glaze).
Glaze Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup light-brown sugar
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
Glaze Directions
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar and maple syrup; stir to combine.
- Bring to a boil and immediately reduce to a simmer; cook until sugar has melted and sauce has thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Add salt, vanilla, and heavy cream. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until thick, about 5 minutes.
- Keep warm until ready to use.
Putting It All Together:
- As soon as they are removed from the oven, use a toothpick to lift one side of each cupcake so they are all slightly tilted, lifting a cupcake even more with your fingertips, pour 2 tbsp. glaze into each cup, then nudge cupcake back in place. Let cool 10 minutes.
- To finish, invert cupcakes onto a wire rack set over a baking sheet (or foil); spoon 2 tbsp. over each and let set. Serve immediately.
2012 BAFTA Red Carpet
It might be time to break up some of these Australia posts with a red carpet breakdown!
The BAFTAs are the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and are considered the British Oscars. They take place one week before the Oscars, but with all the Oscar madness and having so many red carpet events in such a short time frame, I held off on posting about it.
It’s always nice to post British red carpet looks because we get a whole different set of celebs and get to see different fashion houses shine. Here are my top looks for the 2012 BAFTAs.
Michelle Williams in H&M… Yes, the normal, high-street store H&M
Christina Hendricks in Vivienne Westwood
Holliday Grainger in Valentino
Jessica Chastain in Oscar de la Renta
Colin Firth escorting Livia Giuggioli in a Paul Smith suit
Christina Ricci in silky gold Givenchy
Poppy Delevigne in form-fitting Escada os my 3rd favorite look
Noemi Harris in yellow Emilio Pucci is my 2nd Best Dressed for the night
Melissa George in liquidy Victoria Beckham is my Number 1 Best Dressed for the 2012 BAFTAs
If you want a recap, here’s my breakdown from the 2011 BAFTAs last year.
As for this year, let me know which looks you liked (hello, sexy Miss Piggy!) and any you didn’t! And how do we feel about H&M being on the red carpet? I typically feel like the red carpet should be reserved for the high-end and couture lines, but there’s something refreshing about seeing a normal store. And with H&Ms new conscious line, we could be seeing more of them.
Natural Beauty in Australia
In the Blue Mountains overlooking a valley
One of the things I loved about Australia is how beautiful the scenery and nature is. It’s easy to get caught up in the bridges and skyscrapers and big monuments when you’re in a new city or country, but this trip I tried to take the time to enjoy all of the natural beauty that surrounded us.
Since Australia is ‘backwards’ in terms of seasons, it was autumn there which meant that the leaves were starting to turn, pumpkin-flavored everything was in all the restaurants and cafe’s and the days were sunny and the nights were crisp.
Here’s some of the more natural beauty that we came across in Australia.
A gorgeous waterfall in the distance in the Blue Mountains. I would love to hike there one day.

Playing with Kangaroos and Koalas in Australia
One of the most fun things that we do on every trip to Australia is visit a wildlife park where you can feed, play and hang out with the animals. Most zoos are exactly that… Just a zoo with animals and cages and maaaaybe a petting area with a few gross lambs.
This wildlife park just outside of Sydney has a whole large area where you can get up close with the animals and there are no cages. Now — total confession here — I don’t really like animals.
Outside of little puppies and my kitties, I am not an animal person. It is a tiny bit fun to play with animals that we just don’t have in the states and even though I am smiling in all these pictures, I promise I am cringing and freaking out on the inside.
Here are some of the fun and gorgeous little animals that we took pictures of. This is exactly how I like to enjoy animals — through a picture on a computer screen where I don’t have to actually touch them.
Adam playing with a snake. That snake wrapped around Adam’s arm within 15 seconds and was ready to constrict! NOPE.
Petting a bigger wallaby. The kangaroos are so much bigger, so I stuck with the smaller wallabies

A penguin at Featherdale Wildlife Park
How INSANE is this bird?! It it just naturally beautifully color blocked. The most beautiful and fashionable bird I have ever seen.
Adam feeding a wallaby who loved him
Have you ever played with a wallaby or kangaroo (or marsupial in general)? Do you like animals and would you want to play with some of these? That joey wallaby wrapped up in a blanket is about as much as I’m comfortable with!
A Trip to Sydney, Australia
At Circular Quay in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Well, I think it’s about time we get some blog posts up, dontchathink? Sorry for the radio silence over here! We haven’t been home for over 4 weeks and now I’m finally back in the USA with cell phone access, Internet whenever I need it and my own comfy bed with two kitty cats waiting to snuggle every night.
As the picture above shows, we were in Australia for a few weeks! This was my 3rd time in Australia and our last trip was exactly one year ago.
We all took a ton of pics and I will split them up in a few posts. This first post of pics has all the touristy stuff and just some cool spots I found. Captions are below each image.

These are our first round of Australia pictures. Let me know if you have been, if Australia is on your list of places to visit and what you think of the pics!
Truthful Tuesday VI
I confess… Since posting the Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins recipe a few months ago I have made them about half a dozen times! They’re so good and easy, I just can’t pull myself to make a different muffin.
I confess… I loooove ramen noodles and Adam makes the best noodles ever. Those little 15¢ packets of dry noodles and seasoning are so yummy and I have no shame about loading them in my shopping cart by the dozens.
I confess… I get freaked out when I’m home alone and someone knocks on the door/rings the doorbell. Not only do I freak out but I often run into another room and hide. And if that room is the kitchen, I miiiight grab a knife.
I confess… Often I wish I was a scene chick. One of those girls with the badass colored hair with weird choppy cuts, tattoos all over and crazy dark make up. It’s totally hot.
I confess… I have always wanted to work at Starbucks. “What do you do for a living?” “Oh, I’m a barista.” Doesn’t that just roll off the tongue?
I confess… Secretly, I’m kind of a hippie at heart. Yes, my Louboutin wearing, Clarisonic using, please-give-me-everything-from-Barney’s self is getting more and more hippie. I use Dr. Bronner’s soap for everything, make my own natural home cleaning products (water and vinegar!), use a Diva Cup, have done more research into cloth diapering that any non-pregnant woman should, and swear by acupuncture as a cure for my allergies and headaches. But I am not giving up my Louboutins.
I confess… I get totally grossed out by people sleeping on our couches and I forbid it in my house. And if I hear or notice that someone sleeps on a couch (either in my house or other peoples houses) I won’t sit on the couch and will politely sit in a chair instead.
Those are my truthful confessions for this week. Let me know what you think and what you can ‘fess up to!
